Weather Innovation, Smart Energy, and Resilience (WISER) is an NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC).
⚡🌪️Extreme weather events are pushing power systems to their limits, causing widespread outages and long restoration times. While traditional models focus on predicting outage locations, they often overlook critical infrastructure factors—such as blocked roads, fallen trees, and repair crew accessibility—that significantly impact recovery efforts. This WISER-funded project is developing a post-storm restoration Total System Model (PRTSM) to provide a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to outage prediction and restoration.
By integrating power grids, transportation networks, and emergency response logistics, this model will refine restoration time estimates, optimize resource allocation, and improve resilience planning under extreme weather scenarios. With insights that go beyond standard metrics like SAIDI and SAIFI, this research will empower utilities, policymakers, and emergency managers to prioritize grid-hardening investments and improve disaster response strategies. Stay tuned as we revolutionize resilience modeling!
